The Hustler Fund has disbursed over KSh 50 billion since launch. Yet most Kenyans are still borrowing the minimum amount because they do not know how the scoring system works. This guide breaks down everything—loan limits, interest rates, repayment, and how to increase your limit.

What Is the Hustler Fund?

The Hustler Fund is a government-backed mobile loan product launched in November 2022. It is accessible via M-PESA and targets micro, small, and medium enterprises as well as individual Kenyans who need quick credit.

Who Qualifies for the Hustler Fund in 2026

  • Must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 and above
  • Must have a registered Safaricom M-PESA line
  • Must have an active National ID
  • Your line must be active for at least 6 months
  • No requirement for formal employment or salary

Hustler Fund Loan Limits—Personal, Business, and Savings

Your loan limit depends on your borrowing and repayment history. New users start low and grow their limit with responsible use.

Business LoanKSh 5,000KSh 500,0005% of loan
Group LoanKSh 10,000KSh 1,000,0005% of loan

Note: 5% of every loan disbursed goes into your Hustler Fund savings wallet automatically. You cannot withdraw this until you exit the fund.

How to Apply Step by Step via M-PESA

  1. Go to M-PESA on your Safaricom phone
  2. Select Financial Services
  3. Select Hustler Fund
  4. Select Get a Loan
  5. Enter the amount you want to borrow
  6. Confirm with your M-PESA PIN
  7. Money arrives in your M-PESA within seconds

Interest Rate and Repayment Schedule

The Hustler Fund charges 8% per year for personal loans. This is significantly cheaper than most mobile loans in Kenya.

Loan TypeInterest RateRepayment Period
Personal Loan8% per year14 days
Business Loan8% per year30 days
Group Loan8% per year14 days

Why Your Limit May Be Low and How to Increase It

  • Always repay on time—every on-time repayment raises your credit score
  • Borrow regularly and repay fully—this builds your history
  • Do not let loans lapse—defaulting reduces your limit significantly
  • Use other Safaricom services—M-PESA activity influences your scoring

Common Mistakes That Get Your Application Rejected

  • Trying to borrow when you have an unpaid Hustler Fund balance
  • Using an M-PESA line registered under someone else’s ID
  • Inactive SIM card or line suspended by Safaricom
  • Attempting to borrow more than your current approved limit
