Staff at footwear giant Bata Kenya are once again seeking intervention as they report being forced to work 12-hour shifts, while the extra four hours go unpaid, echoing previous complaints about exploitative conditions at one of the country’s oldest shoe companies.
Employees say those who question the absence of compensation or try to challenge unfair treatment are dismissed without notice, and some report being replaced when attempting to sign leave letters.
These ongoing issues build on earlier grievances raised by staff over abrupt mass layoffs, misleading contracts, unsafe working conditions, and a work environment where management enforces arbitrary rules without regard for labour laws or employee welfare.
“Hello Nyakundi. I wanted to expose something. I work at Bata Kenya and we are working 12 hours. According to labour laws, we are supposed to work 8 hours. It is sad that the extra 4 hours we are not paid. Some workers asked why there is no pay, and they were fired for no reason. When you ask why there is no payment, they fire you. You try to sign a leave letter, and they replace you. Imagine 4 extra hours without pay! Kindly help us expose this!”
