Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused President William Ruto of deliberately working to create divisions within the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The Mt. Kenya region, with nearly six million registered voters, holds the largest voting bloc in Kenya. It played a pivotal role in propelling President Ruto to victory in the 2022 general election. However, relations between the president and the region soured following Gachagua’s dramatic impeachment last year, with many leaders and residents accusing Ruto of betrayal.

According to Gachagua, the president is now employing underhand tactics to weaken Mt. Kenya’s political unity to secure his re-election. Speaking during a rally in Murang’a County on Sunday, the former deputy president alleged that Ruto has strategically placed political “moles” in the region to ensure it does not vote as a united bloc in 2027.

Gachagua specifically pointed fingers at Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, claiming that he is part of Ruto’s wider scheme to destabilise the region’s leadership. He alleged that the president is secretly funding a plan to launch a new political party that would serve his reelection interests.

“Ndindi Nyoro’s public criticism of Ruto’s government is just political theater meant to mislead the people of Mt. Kenya,” Gachagua said. “It is a calculated strategy designed to confuse voters and create the illusion of independence, while in reality, it’s all part of the president’s plan.”

He further alleged that Ruto was channeling resources into Murang’a through various “projects” and incentives to entice local politicians, thereby deepening divisions among leaders.

However, Gachagua expressed confidence that residents of the region would see through what he described as political manipulation.

“The people of Murang’a are wise. Many have tried to mislead them in the past, but they have always remained steadfast and focused,” he told the cheering crowd.

The former deputy president urged Mt. Kenya voters to stay united and resist what he termed as bribes and empty promises aimed at derailing their collective political strength.
