The opposition, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has issued a statement following the circulation of a video showing Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga celebrating the demise of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement released by opposition spokesperson Mukhisa Kituyi, the coalition condemned Governor Kahiga’s remarks and criticised President William Ruto’s UDA Party for tolerating such insensitive comments.
Mukhisa clarified that Kahiga has no links to the opposition and has, in fact, been working closely with senior UDA officials.
“For the record, Governor Kahiga was elected on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket. He is not a member of the United Opposition or any of the parties under our coalition,” Mukhisa stated.
He urged President Ruto and top UDA figures, including Party Chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Hassan Omar, to publicly denounce Kahiga’s behaviour, warning that silence from the party’s leadership only fuels tribal tensions.
“Governor Kahiga’s despicable sentiments should, in one accord, be condemned by all Kenyans, starting with his UDA Party Leader, President William Samoei Ruto; the Chairperson, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire; and the Secretary General, Senator Hassan Omar. Indeed, UDA should by now have issued a public censure and an apology to the nation,” he added.
The opposition further called on the Council of Governors to take disciplinary action against Kahiga, dismissing his recent apology as mere damage control lacking sincerity.
