Githurai Ward MCA, Deonysias Mwangi Waithira, has officially tendered his resignation to the Nairobi County Assembly, citing frustration and lack of support from the county government.
Mwangi Waithira was elected in the 2022 General Election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket. He was among the party loyalists who invested heavily in mobilising support for President William Ruto, particularly in Githurai, which is considered the gateway to the Mt. Kenya region.
In a letter dated Wednesday, Waithira explained that his decision to step down was driven by persistent challenges and what he termed as deliberate frustrations from the Nairobi County Government, led by Governor Johnson Sakaja.

“I, Hon. Deonysias Mwangi Waithira, do hereby tender my resignation from the elective position of Member of the Third Nairobi City County Assembly for Githurai Ward, having been duly elected and subsequently gazetted vide Gazette Notice No. 9956 of 24th August 2022, under Constituency Code No. 279 and County Assembly Ward Code No. 1391, on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket, with effect from Monday, 1st November 2025.”
Waithira stated in part.
The MCA accused the county executive of failing to deliver basic services and implement development projects within Githurai Ward. He noted that despite his continuous efforts to raise concerns about pressing issues affecting his constituents, his pleas were consistently ignored or met with unnecessary delays.
“Additionally, the lack of proper mechanisms to ensure the implementation of Assembly resolutions, coupled with delays in facilitating the Ward Office imprest by the County Assembly Service, has significantly hindered the effective execution of my mandate in Githurai Ward,” Mwangi added.
In response, Governor Sakaja, speaking during an interview with Radio Jambo, said he had come across the resignation letter online but had not yet confirmed its authenticity or the exact reasons behind Waithira’s decision.
He further revealed that some sources had informed him that the MCA might have resigned because he recently secured a U.S. green card and could be preparing to travel abroad.
“Being a leader is not easy. I will find out what the real issue is. However, I have heard from some people that he is planning to travel overseas. I cannot confirm this, but I will sit down with him to understand the matter better,” Sakaja said.
