Tension escalated in Keroka Town after a Probox vehicle, ferrying goons hired to disrupt a rally by presidential hopeful Dr. Fred Matiang’i, was set ablaze by an angry crowd.
According to reports, the vehicle’s arrival in the town immediately raised suspicion among locals, who believed its occupants had been mobilized to cause chaos during the political event.
Most of the occupants reportedly fled the scene as tempers flared.
However, two individuals were cornered and injured after being confronted by members of the public.
They are currently receiving treatment at a nearby health facility.
A photo circulating online shows the mangled wreckage of the vehicle at the scene, completely destroyed by fire.
The incident comes at a time of heightened political temperatures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In recent months, several political gatherings across the country have reportedly been disrupted by chaotic scenes, with claims of hired goons being used to interfere with rallies.
Dr. Matiang’i, who was accompanied by other united opposition leaders, had been touring Kisii County, holding a series of roadside rallies.
During his visit, he was coronated as a Kisii elder and community spokesman at Ekerenyo Grounds in Nyamira County.
Kisii elders conducted a blessing ceremony and presented him with traditional instruments symbolizing his new role as the voice of the Abagusii community on the national platform.
Authorities are expected to investigate the Keroka incident as concerns grow over security at political events in the lead-up to the next general election.
