Is Natembeya Ruto’s Mole To Dismantle Rigathi Gachagua’s opposition? – Here Is The Painful Truth

In May last year, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was arrested over alleged procurement irregularities, abuse of office, bribery, and the fraudulent acquisition of public funds amounting to KSh 1.4 billion.

According to a statement issued by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), investigators had uncovered irregular and questionable payments tied to projects undertaken between the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years.

The allegations centred on three major developments in the county: the rehabilitation and modernisation of Kenyatta Stadium, the construction of the Trans Nzoia County headquarters and the building of Tom Mboya Hospital.

Prosecutors claimed the governor influenced the awarding of tenders and received kickbacks from contractors through proxies.

At the time of his arrest, Natembeya had emerged as one of the most vocal figures within the emerging opposition coalition. He had joined forces with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, and other political leaders who had begun crisscrossing the country criticising President William Ruto. Their message was blunt: Ruto would serve only one term, they said, citing what they described as a series of political and economic missteps during his time in office.

The coalition had begun positioning itself as a formidable challenge ahead of the 2027 election.

But recent legal and political developments have raised fresh questions about Natembeya’s role within that opposition movement.

Last week, the High Court quashed the corruption charges against the governor and awarded him KSh 2.5 million in compensation for what it termed a wrongful arrest.

The speed of the ruling surprised many observers. In a country where corruption cases often drag on for years, Natembeya’s case was concluded in less than eight months. The court not only dismissed the charges but also ordered compensation.

For critics of the system, such speed is unusual.

Kenya’s political history is filled with cases that stall in courtrooms, quietly fade away, or resurface years later depending on shifting political alliances. Rarely do high-profile corruption cases disappear with such urgency.

Those who closely follow the intersection of politics and the justice system argue that legal outcomes in Kenya often mirror the prevailing political winds. In that view, decisions about who faces prosecution and who walks free can carry broader political implications.

A similar episode unfolded in 2024 involving former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga. Njenga had been facing multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms and participation in organised criminal activity. Yet the case was later dropped by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which cited a lack of witnesses.

Soon afterward, Njenga appeared at Kabiruini Grounds in Nyeri and declared that he was ready for a political confrontation with Gachagua, whom many supporters view as the dominant political voice in the Mt. Kenya region.

To some political analysts, the sequence of events suggested a familiar pattern: legal relief followed by political mobilisation.

Natembeya’s recent remarks have only intensified that debate. On Wednesday evening, during an appearance on Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) on Citizen TV, the Trans Nzoia governor openly questioned Gachagua’s presidential ambitions, raising doubts about the former deputy president’s capacity to lead a national coalition.

The criticism echoed arguments that government allies have frequently used against Gachagua.

For some within the opposition, the comments have fuelled suspicions that certain political figures may be working, directly or indirectly, to weaken the fragile alliance forming against the president.

Whether that suspicion holds any truth remains a matter of political interpretation. Kenyan politics has long been defined by shifting loyalties, quiet negotiations, and strategic alliances that rarely unfold in public view.

One detail about Natembeya, however, is widely known. Before entering elective politics, he served as a powerful provincial administrator, including stints as county commissioner in both Nairobi and the Rift Valley.

Those roles placed him at the centre of Kenya’s administrative machinery, a system that often operates at the intersection of governance, security, and political strategy.

In the high-stakes arena of Kenyan politics, experience in that world can prove to be a powerful asset.
