Journalists George Njoroge and Gilbert Sitati were assaulted in Cherengany by individuals reportedly linked to Senator Allan Chesang while covering a political event, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over press freedom in Kenya.

According to reports, the two were confronted by the attackers over a Standard newspaper story that allegedly linked Chesang to a controversial fake ambulance deal involving Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

Njoroge sustained injuries during the attack, while Sitati was assaulted as he filmed the unfolding incident and nearly lost his phone.

Their colleagues stepped in and managed to rescue them from the hostile group.

The incident has sparked outrage within media circles, with journalists and rights groups warning over increasing cases of intimidation and violence targeting the press.

It also adds to growing scrutiny around alleged corruption links and the safety of reporters covering sensitive political stories.
