A section of the Kikuyu community from the Mt. Kenya region has launched a barrage of insults at the people of Mbeere after they voted overwhelmingly for President William Ruto’s preferred candidate, Leo Wamuthende.
On Thursday, Mbeere North elected UDA’s Leo Wamuthende, who enjoyed the full backing of state machinery led by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire. Wamuthende convincingly defeated Rigathi Gachagua’s candidate, Newton Karish, who finished second in the high-stakes by-election.
Following Wamuthende’s victory, a number of Kikuyus—particularly from Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Nyandarua—took to social platforms to hurl insults at the Mbeere community, branding them fools, dogs, and scavengers and using other unprintable slurs. Some accused Mbeere North residents of “selling out the community” for personal gain.
What most Kenyans may not know is that the government reportedly spent over Sh700 million on food distribution in Mbeere North, an area considered one of the poorest within the Mt. Kenya region.
Despite being home to prominent leaders such as former Attorney General Justin Muturi and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, Mbeere North still lags behind in development. Residents now hope that President William Ruto’s administration will fulfill the pledges made to them during the election campaigns.
