Kikuyu Member of Parliament and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed claims that the government is planning to ban TikTok and other social media platforms.
Taking to his X account, Ichung’wah clarified that the ongoing debate is not about suppressing digital platforms but about ensuring responsible regulation to protect users, especially children.
“The moral pervasion and erosion of decency on social media platforms, including TikTok, calls for responsible regulation to protect our children,” Ichung’wah stated.
He emphasized that no social media platform is facing a ban, noting that platforms like TikTok have become powerful economic tools for thousands of Kenyan youth.
“No one is banning TikTok or any other social media platform. These platforms are empowering thousands of our youth economically and creating real opportunities,” he said.
Ichung’wah argued that while the digital economy must be supported, there is also a need to safeguard personal data, protect minors from harmful content, and preserve societal values.
His remarks come amid growing public debate over the influence of social media content on young people, particularly on platforms driven by short-form videos and viral trends.
