The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confirmed that unknown hackers have taken control of its official @KRACare account on X (formerly Twitter), renaming it “StandsX.” The authority has warned the public against engaging with the compromised account to avoid falling victim to fraud.
In a statement issued through its corporate X account, KRA urged users to use alternative communication channels, including Facebook and WhatsApp via 0711 099 999.
“The official @KRACare X (formerly Twitter) account has been hacked, and its handle changed to StandsX.” Members of the public are strongly warned not to engage, share personal information, or send money to any messages or posts from this account, as they are fraudulent.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched urgent efforts, in collaboration with X, to retrieve and secure the official account. Official updates will be shared through verified KRA communication channels.
You can still reach us on Facebook at facebook.com/KRACare or via WhatsApp at 0711 099 999. Thank you,” KRA stated.
The breach has disrupted taxpayer support services in Nairobi, with investigations currently underway. No group has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack.
The authority further confirmed that it is working closely with X’s management team to restore the account and ensure its security.
The compromised account, created in February 2014, boasts over 339,000 followers and follows more than 3,801 accounts. It was primarily established to provide customer care services to Kenyans using KRA platforms.
