Former Deputy President and DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed suggestions that the Mbeere North by-election results reflect wider political shifts in the Mt Kenya region, instead accusing UDA operatives of widespread bribery and intimidation.
Speaking on Wednesday during an interview on KTN, Gachagua insisted that the people of the mountain “listen to him” and warned that what happened in Mbeere should not be interpreted as a political trend.
Gachagua alleged that the UDA party spent over Sh800 million in voter bribery, further claiming that even those celebrating victory allegedly misused public resources and mobilised goons to intimidate locals.
“UDA spent over Sh800M bribing voters. Even those who claim to have defeated us did so by misusing public funds to bribe people and by mobilizing goons to intimidate their own communities,” he said.
He also took a swipe at President William Ruto, claiming the Head of State does not understand the Mt Kenya region and referring to some of the young leaders around him as “juveniles.”
Gachagua added that the Democratic Party (DP) leadership had informed him of plans to challenge the Mbeere North by-election results in court, calling the move necessary and arguing that the concerns raised deserved judicial determination.
