The Nairobi County Government is mourning the sudden passing of Eng. Charles Ngugi Gathara, Deputy Director of Water and Sanitation, who reportedly collapsed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) moments before boarding a flight to Ghana for official duties.
According to preliminary reports, Eng. Gathara was at the departure terminal preparing to board when he suddenly fell ill and collapsed.
Emergency responders rushed to assist him, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Colleagues and county officials described him as a hardworking, diligent, and highly professional public servant, deeply committed to improving water and sanitation services in Nairobi.
The exact cause of his death remains unclear.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations, including a post-mortem examination, to determine the circumstances that led to his sudden collapse.
His death comes at a time of heightened tension within the Nairobi County Government, following recent remarks by Governor Johnson Sakaja alleging interference by powerful cartels seeking to influence county operations.
As investigations continue, leaders and staff within the county have expressed shock and grief, sending condolences to Eng. Gathara’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
More details are expected as authorities release official findings.
