Questions continue to mount over Jirongo’s Death, following the emergence of a crucial eyewitness whose account sharply contradicts the version earlier given by the bus driver involved in the fatal crash.
The death of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo had initially been described as a straightforward traffic accident.
However, testimony from a petrol station security guard who says he witnessed the final moments before the collision is now reshaping the narrative.
His claims raise troubling concerns over what truly happened on that quiet stretch of highway at dawn.
The new testimony comes from Ephraim Cheptek, a security guard stationed at the petrol station where Jirongo briefly stopped moments before the deadly crash.
Cheptek insists he was fully alert at the time of the accident, which occurred at around 3 am, and maintains that what he witnessed does not align with the driver’s claims.
According to Cheptek, Jirongo drove into the petrol station in a manner suggesting he intended to refuel.
He slowed down, positioned his vehicle near the pumps, then unexpectedly drove off without taking fuel.
Within moments, the crash occurred directly in front of the station.
Cheptek described the incident as unusual, noting that Jirongo’s behavior did not reflect that of a driver rushing or overtaking traffic.
His account casts doubt on the suggestion that reckless driving by the politician caused the collision.
Central to the controversy surrounding Jirongo’s Death is whether the former lawmaker was overtaking when the crash happened.
Cheptek firmly rejects this version.
He stated that the highway was calm and largely empty at the time, with no congestion on either lane.
According to him, there was no traffic jam that could have forced Jirongo into a dangerous maneuver.
He further clarified that no vehicle was trailing Jirongo’s Mercedes, contradicting suggestions that pressure from traffic influenced his driving decisions.
The guard emphasized that traffic only built up after the crash, when motorists stopped at the scene.
The bus driver involved has maintained that the collision was unavoidable.
He claimed that Jirongo drove out of the petrol station, encountered heavy traffic on his lane, and attempted to overtake, leading to the head-on collision.
The driver stated that he saw the Mercedes approaching and chose to stop rather than swerve, fearing his bus would roll.
He later learned the identity of the victim when police arrived at the scene.
The sharply conflicting accounts have intensified public pressure on investigators to establish the truth behind Jirongo’s Death.
With a lone eyewitness disputing the driver’s claims, calls are growing for a transparent probe, including review of CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and vehicle data.
Until authorities reconcile these contradictions, the circumstances surrounding Cyrus Jirongo’s final moments remain unresolved, fueling speculation and demands for accountability.
