A senior member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, setting the stage for a direct challenge to President William Ruto.
Speaking on Sunday during a roadside engagement with residents in Luanda town and Mudete, Vihiga County, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi said his decision is motivated by a desire to restore Kenya’s standing, which he claims has been eroded by what he described as mismanagement under the current administration.
The ODM lawmaker accused President Ruto of prioritising personal political agendas over national development, alleging that leaders, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, have been used to advance private interests at the expense of ordinary Kenyans.
“I will return here on the 9th, not seeking votes as an MCA, Women Representative, or Senator, but as a candidate for the President of the Republic of Kenya. I am seeking your support to lead this country,” Amisi stated.
However, Amisi did not clarify whether he intends to contest the presidency under the ODM banner or through a new political vehicle that may be registered before 2027.
His announcement comes at a time when ODM appears divided over whether to back President Ruto’s re-election or to field its own candidate. While some leaders, including party chairperson Gladys Wanga, lean towards supporting Ruto, others—led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna—oppose the president’s 2027 bid.
