Opinion Poll Reveals Current Mt Kenya Political Kingpin Between Uhuru, Kindiki, Nyoro And Gachagua

A new opinion poll conducted by Kameme FM presenter Muthoni Wa Kirumba, popularly known as Baby Tops, has revealed the leader currently commanding the greatest political influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Since independence, the Mt Kenya region — which encompasses Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, and Nakuru counties — has always rallied behind a central political figure who guided the electorate on major political, economic, and social matters.

From 1963 to 1978, the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was regarded as the undisputed kingpin of the region. After his death, Mt Kenya briefly lacked a unifying leader, as the late Attorney General Charles Njonjo and others were often viewed as intermediaries for the then-President Daniel Arap Moi rather than independent power centres.

In the early 1990s, the late Kenneth Matiba, former Kiharu MP, emerged as a key political voice for the mountain until Mwai Kibaki gradually assumed the mantle in 2002, following his landslide victory in the presidential election.

Kibaki held the regional leadership baton for a decade, after which Uhuru Kenyatta took over in 2013 and remained the dominant political figure until the 2022 general election.

Currently, the region appears divided, with several leaders vying for the title of Mt Kenya’s political kingpin. Among those positioning themselves for the role are former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. These leaders have been actively courting opinion shapers, elders, and grassroots networks in an effort to consolidate their regional bases.

On Tuesday morning, Muthoni Wa Kirumba took to her Facebook page to conduct an informal poll asking Mt Kenya residents to vote for the individual they consider the region’s political leader.

According to the results:

  • Rigathi Gachagua received an overwhelming 68% of the votes.
  • Uhuru Kenyatta garnered 22%.
  • Ndindi Nyoro managed 8%, while
  • Kithure Kindiki received only 2%.

The outcome suggests that, despite the shifting political alliances and emerging new faces, Rigathi Gachagua currently commands the strongest grassroots support across the Mt Kenya region.
