Yet another death in police custody has sparked public outrage after 23-year-old boda boda rider Jack Deon Maloba died just hours after being arrested and detained at Kawangware Police Post in Nairobi.
Maloba was arrested on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at around 7:00 p.m. and booked into the police cells.
Approximately four hours later, he was pronounced dead.
His body was transferred to City Mortuary, where it was booked in at 10:50 p.m.
Police claim that Maloba was alone in the cell and hanged himself using a T-shirt.
However, the family disputes this account, saying the alleged T-shirt has not been produced.
They further state that Maloba’s body still had all the clothes he was wearing at the time of arrest, raising questions about the police version of events.
The family also alleges that marks on his neck appear consistent with the possible use of a wire, not a T-shirt.
Jack Deon Maloba leaves behind a two-year-old daughter, as calls grow for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
