Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has once again cautioned members and leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) against publicly campaigning for President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027.

The ODM party leader issued the warning amid rising tension within the party, as some senior officials have been openly supporting Ruto’s second-term bid. Raila stressed that ODM must remain united and focused on its political strategy rather than promoting rival interests.

ODM Leaders Accused of Campaigning for Ruto

Since the formation of the broad-based government earlier this year, a number of influential ODM figures have been seen actively mobilising support for President Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election.

Those at the center of the storm include:

  • Gladys Wanga, ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor
  • John Mbadi, Treasury Cabinet Secretary
  • Opiyo Wandayi, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary
  • Hassan Joho, Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary

These leaders have been attending rallies and public gatherings where they have championed Ruto’s agenda, even leading chants of the popular “Tutam” slogan linked to his re-election campaign.

This move has caused unease among ODM loyalists who believe it undermines the party’s independence and long-term political vision.

Raila Urges Discipline and Patience

Speaking on Monday, Raila Odinga reminded ODM members to remain disciplined and avoid making premature statements about the party’s plans for 2027.

He warned that public endorsements of President Ruto could jeopardise ODM’s internal strategy, hinting that the party may field its own presidential candidate in the next elections.

“Do not commit the party to positions that have not been discussed or approved. Who told you ODM will not have its own presidential candidate in 2027?” Raila posed.

The former prime minister added that ODM has a clear political roadmap and will announce its official position on the upcoming election at the appropriate time.

“As ODM, we have a well-structured plan that we are implementing. When the right moment comes, the party will communicate its decision on the way forward,” he affirmed.

Internal Wrangles Threaten ODM Unity

Raila’s remarks come against the backdrop of growing divisions within ODM. Some members have openly declared that they would leave the party if it officially supports Ruto’s re-election.

Among the most outspoken critics is Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has insisted that while party loyalty is important, it should not override personal principles.

“Supporting a presidential candidate is a serious matter. Party loyalty should not force anyone to go against their conscience,” Sifuna stated.

These tensions highlight the challenge ODM faces as it navigates its role in government while preparing for the 2027 political showdown.

What Raila’s Warning Means for 2027 Politics

Raila Odinga’s directive is a clear sign that ODM is not ready to fully back President Ruto’s second-term bid. It also signals that Kenya’s political landscape could shift significantly as parties position themselves for the next general election.

Political analysts believe Raila is keen on preserving ODM’s bargaining power while keeping his supporters engaged and united ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

With just under two years to the polls, Raila’s statement is likely to intensify internal debates within ODM and the wider Azimio coalition, as questions about alliances, candidates, and strategy continue to dominate the political discourse.
