Edwin Sifuna has been granted a major lifeline after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) temporarily stopped his removal as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) secretary general.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, the tribunal suspended the implementation of a resolution passed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, February 11.
The tribunal ordered that the decision to remove Sifuna should not take effect until the matter is fully heard and determined.
“Pending the hearing and determination of this application, this Honourable Tribunal hereby issues orders staying the implementation of the resolution made by the National Executive Committee of the Orange Democratic Movement Party on 11th February, 2026, to remove Edwin Sifuna as the secretary general of the Party,” the ruling stated.
ODM’s NEC had resolved to dismiss Sifuna, accusing him of grossly violating the party’s constitution and showing disrespect toward senior leaders.
ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Shariff explained that Sifuna was removed due to what he described as repeated disrespect towards the party leadership, particularly Senator Oburu Odinga.
He claimed that Sifuna and his allies had questioned Oburu’s appointment as party leader, despite proper procedures being followed.
“It is immoral for anyone to challenge the validity of Oburu Odinga, whether in private or public,” Abdulswamad said. “No one is indispensable in this party. Everyone can be replaced.”
In response, Sifuna insisted that he remains the duly elected secretary general of ODM and vowed to fight the decision.
He said he would challenge what he termed illegal actions through all available channels, including the courts and public opinion.
“Our party’s constitution places a responsibility on us to fight for ODM, and fight we shall. We will challenge every illegality in the courts of law and in the court of public opinion. Surrender is not an option,” he stated.
Sifuna reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and his commitment to the struggle for a fair, just, and democratic Kenya.
However, he maintained that he does not recognise Senator Oburu Odinga as the party leader.
