President William Ruto has reignited political debate after revealing why he spearheaded the impeachment of his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, in October last year.
Gachagua, who was elected alongside Ruto during the 2022 presidential election, was ousted from office after the president successfully rallied both the National Assembly and the Senate to vote him out. The dramatic move, however, came at a political cost, with Ruto losing significant support from the Mt. Kenya region, a stronghold that was crucial to his victory in the fiercely contested elections.

Ruto Explains Gachagua’s Ouster
Speaking during the Waalimu Na Rais Forum at State House, Nairobi, on Saturday, President Ruto said he removed Gachagua because he felt that having an underqualified deputy would hinder his leadership and vision for the country.
“If you want to succeed, choose a deputy who is more educated and intelligent than you,” Ruto stated.
“When you surround yourself with knowledgeable people, they help you shine. You take the credit while they do the heavy lifting. I had a deputy who constantly complained about his lack of education, and I realised he would eventually fail me and the country.”
Ruto further revealed that this was the key reason he appointed Professor Kithure Kindiki as his new Deputy President, describing Kindiki as highly educated and capable of driving the nation forward.
Ruto’s Strong Academic Background
President William Ruto himself boasts an impressive academic journey. He began his higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in botany and zoology.
Determined to advance his studies, Ruto pursued a master’s degree in plant ecology at the same institution before eventually completing a doctorate (PhD) in plant ecology. His research focused on the environmental impact of human activities on Kenya’s ecosystem, showcasing his passion for science, leadership, and sustainable development.
Professor Kindiki’s Distinguished Education
Ruto’s current deputy, Professor Kithure Kindiki, has an exceptional legal and academic background. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Moi University, then pursued a master’s degree in International Human Rights Law at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
Kindiki later attained a doctorate (PhD) in international law from the same university, cementing his reputation as one of Kenya’s most accomplished legal scholars.
Gachagua’s Academic Credentials
In contrast, Rigathi Gachagua holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and literature from the University of Nairobi. While respected for his political experience, his academic qualifications are modest compared to both Ruto and Kindiki.
The Political Impact on 2027 Elections
By impeaching Gachagua, Ruto risked alienating a key voter base in Mt. Kenya, which played a pivotal role in his 2022 victory. As the 2027 general election approaches, analysts predict that this decision could shape Kenya’s political landscape and determine whether Ruto secures a second term in office.
