President William Ruto’s path to Sugoi in 2027 seems increasingly uncertain, especially as the opposition, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, continues to hold massive rallies across the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region and Nairobi.
Over the past month, Gachagua—who has vowed to end Ruto’s “theocratic” rule in 2027—has been drawing huge crowds, leaving state operatives stunned and scrambling to keep up.
On Sunday, after attending a church service in Kahawa West, Gachagua and his supporters stormed Zimmerman, Roysambu, and Githurai, where thousands lined the streets to greet the Mt. Kenya kingpin. In Githurai, often called the gateway to the region, his supporters sang, ululated, and cheered him and his team, celebrating the Wamunyoro villager and his loyal followers.
Before the government could even recover from the Githurai shock, Gachagua moved to Nairobi’s Central Business District on Monday. The city welcomed him like a messiah; traffic ground to a halt as he addressed residents with his trademark “gospel politics.”
Much like parishioners listening to a pontiff in Rome, Nairobians seemed captivated by his speech, which resonated with their struggles—over-taxation, rampant plunder of public resources, and widespread wastage at both national and county levels.
Here are photos capturing the energy and excitement of Gachagua’s rally in Nairobi’s CBD on Monday.
