President William Ruto has indirectly issued a warning to his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, over his apparent support for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who now leads the United Opposition.
The United Opposition comprises Gachagua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Democratic Action Party (DAP) leader Eugene Wamalwa, and People’s Liberation Movement leader Martha Karua.
Last week, during a Jubilee Party grassroots leaders’ meeting in Murang’a, Uhuru urged party members and supporters to respect Rigathi Gachagua and desist from insulting him.
“Some of these leaders pretend to be defending Jubilee, yet they keep abusing Gachagua. I don’t want to hear such nonsense again. Do you hear me, Kioni? Anyone insulting Gachagua should leave the party. Everyone should focus on selling their own agenda,” Uhuru warned.
Uhuru’s remarks defending Gachagua have angered Ruto’s camp, with several of his allies threatening consequences if he continues supporting the former deputy president.
On Monday, Ruto’s close ally and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei urged Uhuru to support the current administration or risk losing his security detail and retirement benefits.
“If you don’t support Ruto’s government, we are going to withdraw all your retirement benefits, including your security,” Cherargei declared.
He concluded by advising former President Uhuru to remain at home and observe how the government is being run under His Excellency President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza Alliance team.
