Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has urged the government to move with speed to support victims of the tragic stampede that occurred at Nyayo Stadium during the public viewing and State Funeral of the late Raila Amollo Odinga.
Omtatah revealed that Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) had received more than 40 casualties, with one person confirmed dead following the incident.
During a visit to KNH, the senator met with the Head of the Emergency and Accident Unit and medical personnel who have been working tirelessly to save lives despite limited resources.
The outspoken legislator expressed concern that many victims could be forced to meet their own medical expenses, calling for immediate government intervention to ensure all the injured receive treatment without financial burden.
“It is deeply worrying that many of the injured are still expected to meet their medical costs, with only a small number qualifying for emergency waivers under the current framework,” Omtatah stated on X (formerly Twitter).
He emphasized that the tragedy underscored the urgent need to strengthen Kenya’s emergency response systems and enhance hospital preparedness for large-scale incidents.
“This tragic event, which occurred as the nation came together to mourn one of Kenya’s greatest sons, reminds us of the need to invest in emergency response, improve hospital capacity, and support our overstretched health workers,” he added.
