Fresh details have emerged in the high-profile lorry theft case that has implicated former Mwea Member of Parliament Peter Njuguna, after it was confirmed that one of the recovered vehicles belongs to the Murang’a County Government.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata revealed that the stolen Isuzu lorry was a county garbage collection truck used to serve residents.

“One of these lorries belongs to Murang’a County Government — a garbage collection truck. One suspect is a former Member of Parliament. Thanks to the police for helping us recover,” Kang’ata tweeted, praising officers for their swift action.

Detectives traced and recovered the stolen vehicle in Mombasa during an intelligence-led operation linked to the theft reported in Gatanga on August 16, 2025.

Police said the suspects had fitted the truck with fake number plates in a desperate attempt to avoid detection.

The former lawmaker is currently in custody alongside four other suspects as investigations continue.

Authorities are working to establish whether the group is linked to other vehicle thefts.
