Tanzania’s dictator, Samia Suluhu, is reportedly hiding in an undisclosed bunker as widespread protests erupt across the country following a disputed election held on Wednesday.
In nearly every region, demonstrators stormed polling centres, accusing Suluhu of blocking opposition candidates from contesting key positions. Protesters claimed the election was neither free nor fair and have demanded Suluhu’s immediate resignation.
For the better part of Wednesday, angry citizens barricaded major roads leading to Dar es Salaam and Arusha, bringing much of the country to a standstill.
In response to the growing unrest, Suluhu’s administration declared a 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew in an attempt to quell the protests. However, demonstrators vowed to continue their push until what they termed “the dictatorship” ends and Samia Suluhu steps down.
A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the embattled leader is issuing directives from a heavily fortified underground bunker.
