There was drama and confusion in Bondo during the public viewing of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga’s body after a man attempted to attack Deputy Inspector General of the Administrative Police Service, Gilbert Maseng’eli.
The shocking incident happened on Saturday as thousands of mourners thronged Raila’s rural home to pay their last respects.
Eyewitnesses said the man, appearing agitated, suddenly lunged at the senior police officer, attempting to rough him up.
Alert officers quickly intervened, overpowering the man before wrestling him to the ground.
He was later beaten as the crowd watched in disbelief.
The situation briefly turned chaotic as other mourners pleaded with the officers to spare him, chanting for calm and urging restraint.
Security officers had a hard time controlling the massive crowd that had gathered for the solemn event, with emotions running high among Raila’s supporters.
The incident underscored the tense and emotional atmosphere surrounding the final farewell to the opposition icon.
