Officers from the National Police Service reportedly shot and killed three people at Kasarani Stadium during the public viewing of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Raila Odinga, 80, passed away in India on Wednesday morning, and his body arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday morning.
Initially, the body viewing was scheduled to take place at Parliament Buildings, but due to the overwhelming crowds, the ceremony was relocated to Kasarani Stadium.
At Kasarani, over 100,000 mourners gathered on Thursday afternoon, making it difficult for police officers to control the restless crowd.
At one point, police resorted to using live ammunition and tear gas to contain the situation after the stadium, which has a capacity of 60,000, was filled beyond limit.
During the ensuing chaos and stampede, three people were fatally shot by police bullets.
A video has since surfaced showing the exact moment officers opened fire on the mourners, leading to the deaths of three individuals.
