Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has sparked debate among Kenyans after being spotted in a viral photo hanging out with Nick Ruto, the son of President William Ruto, at a popular entertainment spot in Nairobi.

Babu, who first rose to prominence in politics after being elected as Embakasi East MP in 2017 on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, successfully defended his seat in the 2022 General Election under the same party associated with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

However, following Raila’s decision to work with President Ruto’s government under what he termed as a “broad-based government,” Babu Owino publicly distanced himself, accusing Raila of betraying the Gen Z movement and abandoning the fight for ordinary Kenyans.

In response, Babu, together with ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, launched a new political outfit named the Kenya Moja Alliance.

According to the duo, the alliance seeks to provide a strong opposition to President Ruto’s administration after Raila’s perceived political shift. Their ultimate goal is to unseat Ruto and prevent him from securing a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

Despite this strong anti-Ruto stance, an undated photo emerged online showing Babu Owino enjoying a night out with Nick Ruto. This immediately triggered a heated discussion online, with many Kenyans branding Babu a “snitch.”

Critics argued that it was hypocritical for Babu to criticize the president and accuse him of mismanaging the country and being responsible for Gen Z deaths while at the same time being seen in the company of his son.

Amid mounting criticism, Babu Owino came forward on Monday to set the record straight.

Speaking to his followers, the legislator clarified that the controversial photo was not recent but rather taken in 2018, long before his current political battles with the president.

“Let me clarify this for the record. The last time I drank alcohol was on the 17th of January, 2020. The photo circulating online was taken back in 2018. I have been sober for the past five years. My focus now is to transform the lives of Nairobians and Kenyans just as I transformed my own life,” Babu stated.

The viral photo continues to stir political conversations online, with some Kenyans accepting Babu’s explanation while others remain skeptical about his ties with the First Family.
