President William Ruto once again broke down in tears on Thursday when he hosted Kenya’s Tokyo World Athletics champions at State House.
During his address to the athletes, Ruto, who was spotted holding a handkerchief, said he had been deeply touched by their remarkable performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Kenya secured second place globally, finishing behind the United States with an impressive tally of 11 medals—seven gold, two silver, and two bronze. Much of the glory came from the country’s dominance in the middle- and long-distance races, which reaffirmed Kenya’s reputation on the world stage.
While delivering his remarks, Ruto was overcome with emotion, saying he felt immense pride in the way the athletes carried the nation’s flag and honour. He noted that defeating nearly every other country in the world, save for the USA, was no small feat.
However, his public display of tears has divided opinion. Many Kenyans online criticised the president, suggesting his emotions were less about pride and more about political theatre. They argued he could be attempting to rekindle the sympathy vote strategy he used during the 2022 general election, which eventually propelled him to victory.
A video of the emotional moment has since circulated widely, sparking debate over whether Ruto’s tears were genuine or a calculated political move ahead of the 2027 polls.
