Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has strongly refuted allegations that he was responsible for spreading a rumour suggesting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was either gravely ill or dead.
The controversy began on Saturday when whispers circulated online about Mr. Odinga’s health.
By Sunday morning, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) issued a statement accusing Mr. Musyoka and other opposition figures of fuelling the speculation.
In the statement, Raila Odinga’s longtime aide Dennis Onyango claimed the false reports formed part of a wider smear campaign driven by individuals who had previously opposed Mr. Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
“The hope of this group, both then and now, is to exploit Mr. Odinga’s name for political advantage in their rivalry with President William Ruto,” Mr. Onyango stated. He further stressed that Mr. Odinga has always been candid about his health, pointing to occasions when the ODM leader publicly disclosed his medical status.
Mr. Musyoka, however, swiftly dismissed the accusations, saying ODM was unfairly targeting him.
“Let it be stated clearly: Kalonzo Musyoka harbours no ill will towards Mr. Odinga. Any suggestion that he wishes him harm is unfounded and misleading,” said his spokesperson, Damaris Abdalla.
She criticised ODM’s remarks as an attempt to deflect attention from the party’s own internal challenges, insisting that the Wiper Party had played no part in circulating information about Mr. Odinga’s health.
“ODM’s effort to drag Mr. Musyoka into its own issues is unnecessary and baseless,” Ms. Abdalla added.
She also rejected claims that the Wiper leader had any role in the failure of Mr. Odinga’s AUC bid. According to her, the decision was shaped by international diplomatic dynamics rather than the influence of Mr. Musyoka.
“Mr Odinga’s unsuccessful bid for the AUC chairmanship cannot be attributed to Mr Musyoka. Broader geopolitical and strategic considerations were at play,” she said.
Ms Abdalla concluded by affirming that Mr Musyoka remains committed to justice, accountability, and constructive politics and would not be drawn into what she described as “political distractions and sideshows.”
