President William Ruto has officially confirmed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee Party have joined the broad-based government, an initiative aimed at uniting Kenyans across the political divide.
Speaking during a Sunday service at the Africa Inland Church in Ziwani, Nairobi, where he joined worshippers to mark the church’s 70th anniversary, President Ruto revealed that Uhuru Kenyatta, who leads the Jubilee Party, is now part of the unity arrangement.
The broad-based government, jointly initiated by President Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, was formed in the aftermath of the nationwide protests that took place on 25 June 2024.
The movement seeks to bring together leaders from different political affiliations to promote peace and accelerate national development.
The initiative has already drawn the support of several senior political figures, among them KANU chairman Gideon Moi.
President Ruto, while addressing the congregation, noted that he has been holding discussions with Raila Odinga, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Gideon Moi on ways to transform the capital city.
“Nairobi cannot continue to be a city engulfed in filth,” he said. “We have already begun cleaning up the Nairobi River, and we are now finalising an agreement with the private sector to help us restore the city’s beauty.”
The President further outlined his vision for a modernised Nairobi, emphasising improved infrastructure and public sanitation.
“We must eliminate muddy roads and ensure that all streets are well lit. My government is committed to providing the necessary resources to make Nairobi clean, motorable, and a city of light, not darkness,” he stated.
Dr Ruto also expressed confidence that Kenya is on track to achieving first-world status by the year 2055, citing his administration’s development agenda and the growing spirit of national unity.
“Over the next 30 years, Kenya will transition from a third-world to a first-world nation. We have remained behind for far too long. With hard work and unity, we can build a prosperous and developed country by 2055,” he affirmed.
The Head of State added that he has already engaged close to 80 per cent of Members of Parliament, along with key opposition leaders, in discussions on how to move the nation forward.
“I have spoken with Raila Odinga, Uhuru Kenyatta, and more recently Gideon Moi on how we can collectively drive Kenya towards first-world status. I will continue to engage all leaders for the sake of our country,” he concluded.
