Royal Media Services journalist Nancy Omweri has threatened to take legal action against controversial blogger Edgar Obare over what she terms as false and malicious allegations shared on his social media platforms.
Through her lawyer Danstan Omari, Omweri issued a demand letter and notice of intention to sue, accusing Obare of using his Instagram page “Bnnbasic” and his Telegram channel “BNN Kenya” to publish defamatory content linking her romantically to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.
According to the letter, Obare allegedly provided his followers with a platform to post anonymous, damaging claims implying that Omweri was unfaithful to her husband and involved with influential public figures.
The posts, which also included her photograph, went viral and attracted widespread online reactions.
Omweri, a respected journalist, maintains that the claims are entirely false and have caused her severe emotional distress and reputational harm, both personally and professionally.
Her lawyer, Omari, argues that Obare’s actions amount to criminal defamation under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, which prohibits publishing false information with the intent to damage another person’s reputation.
Omweri has demanded that Obare:Admit liability for defamation,Pay KSh 10 million in damages,Issue a full public apology and retract the defamatory statements from all his social media platforms.
She has given Obare seven days to comply, failure to which she will proceed to file a formal defamation suit in court.
“Our client denies any knowledge of such information and challenges you to produce evidence of these allegations in a court of law,” the demand letter reads in part.
Neither Obare nor his legal representatives have issued a response to the notice at the time of publication.
