When former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati passed away earlier this year, ODM leaders and supporters across the country took to the streets and social media, celebrating the death of a man they described as a criminal who had rigged their leader Raila Odinga out of victory.
In fact, Chebukati’s family was forced to issue a statement urging Kenyans to stop rejoicing over his demise.

What ODM leaders and their supporters did not realise then was that a time would come when someone else would also celebrate the death of their political icon and party leader, Raila Odinga.
On Tuesday, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga was captured on camera celebrating the death of Raila Odinga, who passed away last Wednesday and was buried at his Bondo home on Sunday.
Speaking in vernacular during a function in Kieni, Kahiga claimed that God had taken away Raila Odinga because President William Ruto was marginalising the Mt. Kenya region.
“You can see what had been planned, but God brought something unexpected. Now it’s total confusion. We didn’t harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us. The plan that had been hatched, if you looked closely — for those who travel — all the goodies were being directed elsewhere because of tomorrow’s plans. It seemed they had done away with us, but God intervened and brought this thing,” Kahiga said.
He continued:
“Now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan was probably to throw us out. But who is God? Does He eat ugali in someone’s house or sleep in Kayole? He came through in His own way. He saw that there was too much disagreement up there in heaven and came for Baba so that he could go and smoothen things there.”
Kahiga’s remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from leaders across the political divide, who have termed them insensitive, tribal, and divisive.
