Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga has found himself at the center of controversy after being captured on camera celebrating the sudden death of the late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

Raila, aged 80, passed away last Wednesday in India after suffering a heart attack. His body was laid to rest in Bondo on Sunday, during a state funeral attended by President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kahiga, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was recorded on video expressing what he saw as a divine act following Raila’s death.

In the footage, which was allegedly recorded by a mourner, Governor Kahiga is heard speaking in Kikuyu. He expresses his dissatisfaction with what he claims to be the government’s unfair prioritisation of development projects in the Nyanza region.

He further suggests that Raila’s passing is part of a divine plan to restore balance and refocus development efforts on the Central region.

“All good things were being taken there because of future plans—it felt like they had forgotten about us. But God intervened. He acted in His own way. He saw that even those in heaven were too divided, so He took Baba to help settle things up there,” Kahiga is heard saying in the video.

The video was reportedly recorded by a man identified as Wachira, a police officer attached to the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Wachira, who is planning to run for the Thegu MCA seat in 2027 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), has also found himself thrust into the spotlight.

Here is his photo.
