A video has emerged showing President William Ruto seemingly celebrating the sudden death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Raila Odinga, a seasoned politician and businessman who dominated Kenya’s political scene for over four decades, passed away on October 16 while receiving Ayurvedic treatment in Kochi, India.
However, preliminary investigations indicated that the 80-year-old political icon died of an induced heart attack. He had reportedly travelled to India for Ayurvedic therapy to treat an eye problem.
Following the news, President William Ruto led Kenyans in mourning the veteran leader and even announced that Raila would be accorded a state burial in a colourful ceremony organised by the Kenya Defence Forces.
Throughout his political career, Raila Odinga unsuccessfully contested the presidency five times, the most recent being in the 2022 General Election, where he was defeated by Ruto.
After the 2022 election, Raila, alongside his Azimio coalition led by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, launched the “Sufuria Movement” to protest the high cost of living. However, the demonstrations subsided after the government reduced the prices of essential commodities such as maize flour and fuel.
Two weeks after Raila’s death, while speaking in Nakuru County, President Ruto appeared to inadvertently celebrate his rival’s demise. Referring to the protests, he remarked,
“Kuna watu walikuwa wananisumbua hii Nairobi na sufuria kwa kichwa, lakini sahii wameondoka!”
(“There were people who used to trouble me in Nairobi with sufurias on their heads, but now they are gone!”)
Here is the video of Ruto’s celebrating Raila Odinga’s death.
