The united opposition, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has finally unveiled its presidential lineup that will challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
The coalition brings together Gachagua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, People Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
According to reliable sources, Rigathi Gachagua has decided to back Kalonzo Musyoka’s presidential bid, with George Natembeya as his running mate.
Gachagua, who had earlier vowed to shelve his political ambitions to ensure Ruto’s defeat in 2027, has also proposed Fred Matiang’i for the position of Prime Minister. In addition, he has suggested that Martha Karua should serve as Senate Speaker, while Eugene Wamalwa should take up the role of National Assembly Speaker.
The former second-in-command is also said to have demanded half of the government positions, including cabinet secretaries, principal secretaries, and heads of parastatals.
However, it remains unclear whether members of the Kikuyu community—the country’s largest voting bloc—will endorse Gachagua’s proposed lineup, given their historical preference to remain at the centre of power since Kenya gained independence from the British in 1963.
