Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has weighed in on the removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General, insisting that party officials must strictly communicate the party’s official position rather than their personal opinions.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Mbadi defended the decision to relieve Sifuna of his duties, arguing that the role of Secretary General requires absolute loyalty to the party line at all times.

“When you are the spokesperson of the party, you do not speak your mind to the public contrary to what the party has resolved,” Mbadi said.

“If you don’t want to communicate the official position of the party, the most honorable thing to do is to quit,” he added.

His remarks came hours after ODM’s National Executive Committee meeting in Mombasa resolved to remove Sifuna from the influential post and appoint Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive holder.

Sifuna’s ouster followed months of friction within the party, with the Nairobi Senator openly criticizing ODM’s working relationship with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and publicly declaring that he would not support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
