Ruto Sponsors Kenyan Football Fans’ Dream Trips to Old Trafford and Emirates

President William Ruto has sparked mixed reactions after sponsoring two Kenyan football fans to travel to England and watch live Premier League matches at some of the world’s most famous stadiums.

Manchester United superfan Kevin Masagara and Arsenal supporter Stephen Otieno, popularly known online as “Usefulidioty,” are set to receive fully paid business-class flights and a week of accommodation in the UK.

The two will attend matches at Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium, giving them a rare chance to experience the Premier League atmosphere firsthand.

The President made the pledge during a lively conversation on Monday that quickly excited football lovers across the country. Ruto encouraged the two fans to take in the world-class facilities abroad and return home with ideas and inspiration that could help shape Kenya’s growing sports culture.

According to Ruto, the trip is also linked to Kenya’s ongoing investment in modern stadium infrastructure, including the nearly complete Talanta Stadium, which is expected to host around 60,000 spectators once finished. He suggested that seeing how top clubs manage their facilities could offer valuable lessons as Kenya pushes to improve its own sports venues.

The announcement was met with cheers from some fans and sports officials, who viewed it as a light-hearted and motivational gesture. However, it has also drawn criticism from others who believe the sponsorship is poorly timed, especially as many Kenyans continue to face economic hardships and rising living costs.

Still, the move has ignited conversation nationwide, showing once again how deeply football connects with Kenyan society — both as a passion and a point of debate.
