Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has sensationally claimed that a section of officers within the National Police Service are receiving operational instructions from political figures above the Inspector General (IG), raising fresh concerns over alleged political interference in Kenya’s security apparatus.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Maanzo alleged that the established chain of command within the police service is being undermined by directives originating from senior political offices.
“What has been happening is that police are being instructed from higher levels than the IG, and will probably be instructed directly either by a politician or a minister,” Maanzo said.
The outspoken lawmaker singled out Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of interfering with police operations due to what he described as vested political interests.
“In this case, we blame Murkomen for giving instructions because he is an interested party as a politician,” Maanzo claimed.
According to the senator, the alleged interference extends beyond the Interior Ministry, suggesting that senior political leaders may be influencing security decisions for political gain.
“Unfortunately, the President and his Minister for Interior have direct interests in politics. There is circumstantial evidence to warrant this blame to lie squarely on the President and the Interior Minister,” he stated.
