The Luo Council of Elders has threatened to curse any community member who will not support President William Ruto’s re-election during the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Monday, Luo Council of Elders Chairman Ker Odungi Randa said all members of the Luo community must support the broad based government which is led by President William Ruto. He further stated that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga left the community inside the broad based government and nobody will be allowed to support any other presidential candidate other than President William Ruto.
Randa cautioned members of the Luo community against abandoning what he described as the political path chosen by the late former ODM leader Raila Odinga. He warned that those who choose to join the opposition instead risk attracting a curse from the council of elders.
“I am telling you this in the presence of these elders. Today, I am giving you direction. Where Oburu Oginga is, and where Governor Gladys Wanga is, in the camp supporting President Ruto’s two terms, that is where you should remain. How many of you support two terms for Ruto? Let me see your hands,” he said as members of the crowd cheered.
Randa maintained that, as the Ker of the Luo community, he had the responsibility of providing political guidance. “As the Ker of the Luo people, I am giving you political direction. Raila Odinga left us in government. If you leave that path and join the opposition, I will point at you with my right hand, and your path will come to an end. Do you understand me? Luos must walk one path,” he warned.
The remarks have sparked mixed reactions across the country, with many questioning the role of cultural elders in dictating political choices. Critics have argued that the threat of a curse is an attempt to intimidate members of the Luo community into supporting a president whose policies have been widely criticized. Others have pointed out that Raila Odinga himself had a long history of opposing Ruto before joining the broad based government, and it is unclear whether he would have endorsed the current political direction had he lived.
Political analysts have noted that the council’s statement reflects the deep political realignments taking place in the country, particularly within the Luo community, which has historically been associated with the opposition. The move to support Ruto’s re-election represents a significant shift in the community’s political allegiances, one that has been met with resistance from some members who still identify with the opposition.
President Ruto has not yet commented on the elders’ remarks, but his allies have welcomed the move as a sign of growing support for his administration. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have dismissed the elders’ threats as empty and have urged Luos to vote according to their conscience in 2027.
