PNU Party leader Peter Munya has declared that he would not support former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua if he contests the presidency in the much-anticipated 2027 General Election, citing what he described as Gachagua’s “dictatorial tendencies.”

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV hosted by veteran journalist Jeff Koinange, Munya expressed hope that Gachagua would not be the opposition’s presidential candidate, arguing that Kenya needs leaders who uphold democracy, tolerance, and respect for differing opinions.

“I’m hoping Gachagua is not a presidential candidate because I would not support that kind of a person to run the country,” Munya said.

The former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary claimed that the leadership style he attributes to Gachagua reflects the same traits that many Kenyans have criticized in the current administration.

“Those dictatorial tendencies are the same ones we are saying we don’t want in the current government,” he added.

Munya’s remarks come amid growing political realignments within the opposition as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with debate intensifying over who should carry the coalition’s presidential flag.

Gachagua has already declared his interest in the presidency.

However, he has also said that if he is not selected as the united opposition’s presidential flag bearer, he will support whichever candidate is chosen to fly the coalition’s flag in the 2027 race.
