Detectives in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County, have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of being behind the brutal killing of an elderly woman in an attack that left her critically injured.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Ezekiel Nyongesa Barasa, is believed to be linked to the death of 84-year-old Florence Khosa.
Khosa was rushed to Cheranganyi Nursing Home after sustaining serious injuries during the alleged attack.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, detectives launched a manhunt for Barasa after he went into hiding.
The painstaking investigations eventually led officers to the suspect, who was tracked down and arrested.
He was subsequently subjected to an identification parade, where witnesses positively identified him.
However, as detectives dug deeper into the case, another lead emerged linking Barasa to the killing of another elderly woman in Tongaren, Bungoma County.
The second victim was identified as an 86-year-old woman, with detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and the suspect’s alleged connection to the case.
The DCI said preliminary investigations have also established that the suspect may have attacked the 84-year-old victim before her death.
Detectives are continuing with forensic examinations and other critical lines of inquiry as they work to reconstruct the events and establish the full circumstances surrounding the two incidents.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives compile evidence ahead of his arraignment in court.
