Controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna has exposed himself as one of the latest casualties of state capture, trading in his once fiery reputation as a principled revolutionary and human rights crusader for government breadcrumbs, according to explosive allegations made by controversial blogger Maverick Aoko.
Miguna, who built his name on fearless opposition to authority and unflinching criticism of those in power, has in recent months undergone a transformation that has left many of his former admirers deeply disappointed.
The man who once stood at barricades and spoke truth to power has increasingly been found singing tunes that harmonise suspiciously well with the interests of the very establishment he once claimed to despise.
According to Maverick Aoko, the explanation for Miguna’s dramatic change of tune is straightforward and deeply transactional. The state allegedly approached Miguna with an offer he chose not to refuse. His daughter would be given employment as a National Intelligence Service(NIS) agent, and on top of that, Miguna himself would receive Sh30 million in cash. In exchange, he would be tasked with one primary job, using his platform and his considerable gift for aggressive rhetoric to attack and discredit the opposition, particularly former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies.
The arrangement, if the allegations are accurate, appears to be bearing fruit for his handlers. On Tuesday, barely hours after Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna held their widely publicised meeting at Wamunyoro in Nyeri County, Miguna was the first out of the blocks with a blistering attack on the alliance, dismissing it as tribal, primitive and hypocritical in a post on X that read more like a State House press release than the independent analysis of a free-thinking lawyer.
“The PROBLEMS of Kenya symbolized in one image: The usual mind games; Empty Slogans; Cult of the Personality; Bandit Recycling; Ideological Emptiness; Ethnic Bigotry; Planned Plunder; Abracadabra and Hypocrisy. From Kenyatta’s Gatundu Oaths to Gachagua’s Wamunyoro’s spineless and shameful grovelling. Kenya belongs to all Kenyans. We need a structural overhaul; not tribal musical chairs and games. You can’t say WanTam and embrace a tribalist who has supported all tyrants and looters and profited from PLUNDER of public resources for 45 years. #SocialismIsTheSolution #RevolutionNow,” Miguna wrote on X
The contrast between the Miguna of yesterday and the Miguna of today could not be more striking. A man who was once deported, tear-gassed and denied entry into his own country for refusing to bow to power is now, allegedly, on the payroll of the very system he once fought.
