A hunt for Joseph Kariuki Ndegwa, who is accused of killing his wife, Margaret Nyawira Wangechi, in front of their young children, has intensified, with a local gender-based violence (GBV) activist renewing calls for justice.
Margaret was reportedly killed on October 10, 2025, in the Ngangarithi area of Nyeri County, in a shocking incident that allegedly unfolded as their helpless children watched and cried.
In a passionate social media post, the activist accused Kariuki of killing the mother of his children before fleeing the scene.
She claimed that he has remained at large for more than a year, raising questions about the progress of efforts to apprehend him.
The activist further revealed that Margaret was an orphan who was registered under the government’s Inua Jamii programme.
She alleged that when Kariuki fled, he took his deceased wife’s mobile phone, which contained the number registered for the government assistance programme, as well as her national identity card, which was kept inside the phone cover.
In a disturbing twist, the activist claimed that money had been withdrawn from Margaret’s Inua Jamii funds as recently as September 2026 using the phone number and identification details.
The activist has now appealed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other law enforcement agencies to intensify the search and ensure the suspect is arrested and brought to justice.
She further alleged that Kariuki has occasionally been spotted at a PAG Church in Majengo, Nyeri, but attempts to arrest him have reportedly been unsuccessful.
According to the activist, information about planned police operations somehow reaches the suspect, allowing him to escape before officers can apprehend him. The claims have raised concerns over how a suspect wanted in connection with such a serious crime has allegedly continued to evade arrest.
The activist is now demanding answers and justice for Margaret, whose young children were left without their mother following the tragic incident.
