A 72-year-old woman is recovering from shock after being violently robbed of Sh1.1 million in a daring daylight attack shortly after withdrawing the money from a bank in Karatina town, Nyeri County.
The incident occurred on December 19, moments after the woman left a Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) branch where she had withdrawn the cash for domestic use.
Unaware that she was being followed, she boarded a matatu and later alighted at Gaitu area at around 11am.
According to her report to the police, as she walked along a quiet murram road toward her home, a black vehicle suddenly pulled up beside her.
Four men reportedly jumped out, forcibly bundled her into the car, and sped off toward the Othaya direction.
The suspects allegedly threatened to kill her if she screamed or raised alarm.
After a short drive, they robbed her of the Sh1.1 million and her mobile phone before dumping her in Iridieni area within Mukurweini Sub-county and fleeing.
Although she did not sustain physical injuries, the elderly woman was left deeply traumatised by the ordeal.
Police later visited the scene and the bank as investigations commenced.
Detectives suspect the attackers may have had prior knowledge of the withdrawal, raising concerns about possible insider information or a leak from someone close to the victim.
Authorities say efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects.
