A Mash Poa passenger bus was set ablaze by irate boda boda operators in the early hours of the morning following a fatal road accident along the Nakuru–Mau Summit highway near Salgaa Trading Centre.
The incident occurred at around 1 a.m. when the Kampala-bound bus collided with a boda boda motorcycle, resulting in the death of at least one rider on the spot. The crash sparked anger among fellow boda boda operators, who quickly descended on the scene and torched the bus in what has been widely condemned as an act of mob justice.
Eyewitness accounts regarding the cause of the accident remain conflicting. Some witnesses alleged that the bus driver was speeding and attempting to overtake recklessly, while others claimed the boda boda rider was on the wrong side of the road and veered into the path of the oncoming bus. Despite the differing narratives, no official police statement had been released by morning to clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Motorists and drivers’ associations have strongly condemned the destruction of the bus, describing the act as unlawful and dangerous. The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) issued a statement denouncing the incident and called on the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to swiftly arrest and prosecute those responsible.
“This madness must be dealt with once and for all,” the association said, warning that continued tolerance of such actions threatens public safety and undermines the rule of law.
The incident has once again reignited national concern over the growing trend of mob violence involving boda boda operators, particularly the torching of vehicles following road accidents—sometimes even minor ones. Kenyans have increasingly called on authorities to enforce traffic laws strictly and protect motorists from vigilantism on the roads.
By the time of publication, no arrests had been reported, and investigations into both the accident and the arson were ongoing.
