Former Presidential Running Mate Justina Wamae has come out in defense of Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following heated public debate over his absence from the burial of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County.

Taking to social media, Wamae said that Gachagua made the right call by skipping the emotional ceremony, arguing that the atmosphere at the event was too charged and potentially hostile for him.

“The country is divided on whether the impeached Deputy President was right or wrong for not attending the burial. But from my experience and understanding of the political climate, I believe he made a wise decision,” she wrote.

Wamae emphasized that funerals of major political figures often attract deep emotions, especially where strong political rivalries exist, and attending under such circumstances could easily lead to unnecessary tension.

Her remarks sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans agreeing that Gachagua’s security could have been at risk, while others felt that as a national leader, he should have attended to show unity and respect.
