Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of deploying goons in Nyeri Town ahead of his planned meet-the-people tour.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Gachagua circulated a video that he claims shows groups of men armed with crude weapons patrolling parts of Nyeri.
He further alleged that the individuals were being escorted by police officers, a move he says was meant to intimidate and harass local residents.
According to Gachagua, the presence of the alleged goons was aimed at disrupting his public engagement scheduled for later in the day.
“Bwana IG, I thought the President gave you instructions in public that goons should not be allowed to terrorize Kenyans anywhere in Kenya? Why are your officers escorting goons armed with crude weapons in the streets of Nyeri Town harassing residents ahead of my meeting this afternoon?” Gachagua posed.
The claims have sparked debate online, with supporters condemning the alleged use of intimidation tactics, while others called for official clarification from security agencies.
As of the time of publication, the National Police Service had not issued a statement responding to the allegations or the video shared by the former deputy president.
