Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has responded to accusations from President William Ruto that he impregnated university students and later caused their deaths.
President William Ruto, speaking in Busia County on Monday, alleged that Gachagua had impregnated university students and subsequently killed them. The remarks marked a sharp escalation in the ongoing feud between the two leaders, which has intensified since Gachagua’s impeachment.
In his rebuttal, Gachagua stated that he would not engage with social media propaganda aimed at tarnishing his name. Instead, he emphasized that he is willing to debate the president on more substantial issues, such as allegations of misappropriating private entities like Nairobi Hospital and public utilities, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Bomas of Kenya.
“Sisi hatuwezi jibu wewe propaganda ya social media; tunataka kuku engage vile uliuwa Gen Z, mambo ya Nairobi Hospital na JKIA,” Gachagua said.
How the Allegations Began
The president’s remarks come shortly after new allegations surfaced from Gachagua’s former communications director, Martha J.M. Miano, who sparked debate online with a series of controversial claims.
In a post shared on her Facebook page, Miano accused Gachagua of targeting young women aged between 20 and 23, particularly those from humble backgrounds. According to her, such women are often vulnerable and easily influenced due to their position and societal influence.
She further alleged that some of these relationships resulted in pregnancies, after which the women faced intimidation.
The Most Serious Claims
In a particularly shocking claim, Miano suggested that Gachagua may have been involved in the deaths of two women he allegedly impregnated. One of the alleged victims, she claimed, was a 23-year-old who was the sole breadwinner for her family, leaving her relatives without the financial means to seek justice.
Gachagua’s Strategy: Change the Subject
Rather than address the specific allegations directly, Gachagua has chosen to pivot to counter-accusations against the president. His mention of Gen Z deaths refers to the widespread anti-government protests in mid-2024, during which several young people lost their lives in clashes with police.
By shifting focus to JKIA, Bomas of Kenya, and Nairobi Hospital, Gachagua is attempting to frame the debate around what he calls “real issues” affecting Kenyans. His camp argues that the university students’ narrative is a distraction from more pressing governance concerns.
Political Fallout
The exchange represents an important step forward in the ongoing political war between Ruto and his former deputy. Their relationship has deteriorated sharply since Gachagua’s impeachment in late 2025, with both sides now trading increasingly personal attacks.
Political analysts note that the timing of Ruto’s Busia remarks is significant. With the 2027 election approaching, Mt. Kenya remains the most critical voting bloc. Ruto appears to be attempting to weaken Gachagua’s influence in the region by damaging his personal reputation.
Conversely, Gachagua’s strategy of redirecting attention to Ruto’s own controversies suggests he is positioning himself as a defender of ordinary Kenyans against what he portrays as elite corruption.
What Happens Next
Neither side has presented evidence beyond public statements and social media posts. However, with tensions already high, further exchanges are expected in the coming days.
For now, the public is left to weigh dueling accusations—Ruto’s claims about Gachagua’s conduct with university students against Gachagua’s allegations of misappropriation at JKIA, Bomas, and Nairobi Hospital.
