For the past two weeks, members of the Somali community residing in Nairobi have been at the centre of controversy after being filmed desecrating the Kenyan flag, with some even trampling on it during a heated football match between Mogadishu FC and Kenya Police FC.
According to the Constitution of Kenya, the national flag is one of the country’s most important symbols of unity. It represents the people, land, and sovereignty of the nation. Alongside the flag, the National Coat of Arms — featuring a shield, spears, and the motto Harambee (pulling together) — serves as another emblem of unity. Other vital national symbols include the National Anthem, Ee Mungu Nguvu Yetu (Oh God of All Creation), which speaks of shared resilience and patriotism, and the Public Seal, representing the authority of the government.
In one widely circulated video, a group of Somali youths can be seen desecrating the Kenyan flag during the football match at Nyayo Stadium. In a second, seemingly well-orchestrated clip, a Mogadishu FC supporter dressed in traditional Somali attire approaches a Kenya Police FC fan, snatches his flag, and nonchalantly tosses it to the ground.
These incidents sparked immediate outrage both online and within the stadium, with many Kenyans condemning the acts as “a blatant show of disrespect” to the nation and its symbols.
Although authorities claim to have arrested some of the culprits, many unreported cases of similar misconduct continue to emerge. This comes despite Kenya having offered asylum and refuge to countless Somalis fleeing conflict, terrorism perpetrated by Al-Shabaab, and decades of poor governance in their home country.
Critics have accused President William Ruto’s administration of deliberately downplaying these incidents for political gain. With his political base in the Mt Kenya region increasingly drifting towards the opposition, Ruto is said to be seeking alternative voting blocs to secure his re-election bid in 2027.
The Somali community, including individuals who are alleged to be undocumented immigrants, is now seen as a potential substitute for the dwindling support from Mt Kenya. Reports suggest that efforts are already underway to register thousands of new voters from this community, a move widely viewed as a strategy to counter the influence of opposition figures such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, who are working to consolidate Mt. Kenya’s political clout.
